For some months, the free image hosting service at http://imageshack.us was reeling from a massive attack from spammers. This was not a DDoS style of attack though. It was a concerted abuse of their terms of service.

Spammers uploaded tens of thousands of images promoting the Canadian Pharmacy fraud sites that is the most prevalent scam on the Internet today. It is thought to be owned by one "Igor Gusev" - a Russian, who has been accused of being the criminal behind this fraud by Russian Newsweek. He has subsequently taken court action against the newspaper, its editor, and reporters for slander.  One of the other operatives has been identified as "Andrey Smirnov". Both Gusev and Smirnov have been connected, via WHOIS records, with Glavmed and Spamit, two outfits that underpin the Russian so called "Canadian" Pharmacy fraud and the ubiquitous spamming operation.

Each day, hundreds of the imageshack images have been imbedded in spam messages. They have been hard for imageshack to remove, because each image is unique, thus avoiding a "fingerprinting" approach to removal.

But this week, imageshack hit back at the spammers in an innovative move that has set a trend that other free image hosters should learn from. Instead of replacing the image with a notice stating

they have replaced thousands of the offending images with a fraud warning, making it very clear to the possible victims of this Russian fraud that they are in danger if they visit these sites.

So now, this is what the spam will look like:

The two links in that image present criminal evidence about the Canadian Pharmacy and Canadian Healthcare frauds.

Imageshack one, scammers nil

Other free image hosting sites (like imageshost.ru for example) - please take note and do likewise.

Now, in February 2011, the spammers have decided to try their luck again. They send out millions of spams with links to pharmacy images that they have loaded onto the free imageshack hosting service. I have detected 294 different instances. Here is a small sample:

So people are once again getting spams that look like this:

It's not often that spammers are duped into sending out such colorful and informative public notices about their own activities.

Spam received today

The link uses a URL shortening service at durl.me to redirect to a fraud pharmacy called MedPro. You can read about this fake operation at http://spamtrackers.eu/wiki/index.php/MedPro_Pharmacy
