As it seems others on this board do as well, I click on the links to view the spammed website in order to dig for info to add here, or to hopefully narrow down where it's coming from and report them.  Two things about clicking on the links in spam:
1.  I use a Mac, and (so far) feel relatively safe from spyware, etc.  It's been said that many spammed links also deposit spyware onto PC's.  Windows is my "second language" so I'd be curious to hear other thoughts on spam websites & spyware.  At the very least, I would try using something other than Internet Explorer, as that seems to be the most exploited of browsers.  I would err on the side of caution when it comes to potential spyware on PC's.  Even with the Mac, I make sure I delete the Cookie file when finished.
2. While clicking through the sites, it occurred to me that I might be exasperating the problem thinking that the spammer will go through his log files and think "oh goodie, it's working!  Someone was looking! I must send more spam!"
Lately, I've been making sure I leave a comment in their "contact box" filling in any other bogus info that let's the form go through.  Basically, I say that I'm only there to find out who they are so I could hopefully shut them down.

I don't know if spammers even look at their web log files, but I also send a message typing a bogus URL--it shows up in ther log file.
Example: http://cm.cd5.betterdealsregion.com/YOU-ARE-BEING-REPORTED-TO-THE-FEDS

Sometimes, if they catch me in the right mood, that line is usually a bit more expeitive

I like the bit about adding a message to the url. I did not put it together that that would show up in their stats.
I have tended to use IE and havent had any obvious problems, but I might try using Firefox to be a bit safer.
I'm always careful to remove any numbers after the basic url as I assume that that will identify me in some way and let them know the email address they spammed is live and active.
I too fill out forms and leave messages if possible. A couple of helpful 419-Nigerian spammers have provided me with valid email addresses I use, and an "instant University degree" spammer provided me with valid telephone numbers in case they want to use it.

It's definitely prudent to make sure your virus scanning software and malware scanners are up to date if you're going to hit the spammer's sites.

Sometimes I will feel cheeky and fill out the comments boxes with the hopes the spammer will see it, or at least have to deal with the signal to noise ratio they force on us.

I wonder if they do read the stuff, or if it's just /dev/null'd.

To watch dubious sites I would recommend Firefox, plus NoScript.

NoScript is one of the numerous additions to Firefox.
Basically all javascript, java, etc... is turned off as default.

Using a nonpopular browser probably helps as well,
so you could try Opera...
